Fit score is a custom 0-100 lens for Americans (territorial tax + low personal rate + no worldwide tax + no exit tax + special regime + English + DNV + treaty breadth), not the official jurisdiction score. Conflict-region jurisdictions (UAE) are excluded. Treaty count is a proxy for US treaty coverage, not a guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a country good for American expats?

Three things: a territorial tax system (so your foreign income is not taxed locally and the FEIE / Foreign Tax Credit work cleanly), low personal income tax, and an easy residency on-ramp like a digital nomad visa. English proficiency and a tax treaty with the US make day-to-day life and finances easier. Our American-fit score weights all of these.

Does moving to one of these countries stop my US tax?

No. US citizens are taxed on worldwide income regardless of where they live. These countries are the best fit because their territorial systems interact cleanly with the FEIE and FTC, which reduce - not eliminate - your US tax. Only renouncing US citizenship fully exits the US tax system, and that triggers the US exit tax. See our leaving-the-us guide.

Which country is easiest for Americans to move to?

Countries with a digital nomad visa (DNV) have the lowest barrier - you apply online with proof of remote income and get legal residency in weeks. Panama, Spain, Portugal, Costa Rica, and Colombia all run DNV programs. Income thresholds range from roughly $1,000 to $3,000 per month. See our DNV comparison for current thresholds.

Why is the UAE not on this list?

We do not promote jurisdictions in active conflict situations as move-here destinations, regardless of search volume. The UAE is currently on our conflict-region list and is excluded from all our destination rankings. This is a content policy, not a data-quality issue.
